About The Event
Coral Isles Church kicked off a community composting project with an educational event and hands-on demonstration.
Monroe County Recycling Coordinator Melody Tuschel and UF Extension office Horticulture Agent Maria Quirico began the event with presentations to a group of about 20 church and community members.
They pointed out the problems created by food waste, including production of methane gas, and explained the benefits of composting. Ms. Tuschel demonstrated how to fill the composting bin (which was donated to the Church).
She layered paper, food waste and yard waste to create the right recipe for composting. These materials will decompose and create a nutrient-dense soil product for gardens.
Bring your food waste (coffee grounds, egg shells, fruit and veggie scraps) to Church on Sundays and add it to the bin. The Community is invited to drop off their waste on the first Sunday of every month.
